description Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest (NHAL) is the largest of the state forests. With nearly 223,000 acres it offers plenty of natural wilderness and solitude. Due to its large size the forest has been spilt into two areas: Crystal Lake Area and Clear Lake Area for reservation purposes. drivingDirection Check-in / Registration for all Carrol Lake Campground, Clear Lake Area Campground, Indian Mounds Campground family and wilderness sites is at the Clear Lake Ranger Station. To the Clear Lake Ranger Station from the intersection of Hwys 51 and 47 travel south, on Hwy 47, for approximately 3.5 miles and turn left on Woodruff Rd. Clear Lake Ranger Station will be on the right.

importantInformation Reservations can be made 11 months in advance, reservations are accepted for arrivals the Thursday before Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend. The maximum stay for reservable remote camping sites is 14 days, 7 days for group sites. The maximum stay for the family campground is 14 days. At this time Carrol Lake Campground sites are non-reservable. Indian Mounds Campground, Carrol Lake Campground, Clear Lake Campground family and Clear Lake Campground Reservable Remote Camping - campers must check in at the Clear Lake Ranger Station prior to setting up camp. The Clear Lake Reserveable Remote Camping sites are accessible by water only. Some of the loops in the reservable campgrounds will be closed by locked gates, starting the day after Labor Day. Clear Lake Family Campground offers a water ski area, a public beach, and one boat launch in the campground where a state park sticker is required. There is one boat launch outside the campground where no state park sticker is required. Both boat launches are black topped, have a pier, and parking available. Clear Lake Campground provides a fully staffed ranger station, firewood sales, a campground host, pay phones, and a dump station. Vehicle admission stickers are required. This area has been set aside to preserve the beautiful woods and waters for visitors to enjoy in a quiet, remote setting. Five basic Remote-Reservable campsites are reservable through Reserve America or on a first-come, first-served basis when not reserved. Registration for these sites is done at the Clear Lake Ranger Station. Come and explore the Bittersweet Wild Lakes Area. Shower/flush toilet buildings open approximately May 23. Shower/flush toilet buildings close approximately October 14. Dump station open approximately May 23. Dump Station Closes approximately October 15.
